I will not lie. It is hard for me to believe, but I have become a tweeter. I have a Twitter handle, I am using hash tags, utilize a service called HootSuite, am on some Twitter lists, trying to learn how to gain followers and would even like to become a trend if I could. The even weirder part of all this is that I am finding it fun and useful.
Unfortunately though, there are some unscrupulous (or perhaps uneducated) users, who are not following social media etiquette and are therefore destroying their reputation and any chance of building solid relationships with their network.
So onto the techniques. (1) Think about who you want your followers to be – like with any other idea, you need to have some sort of a plan. If you’re looking to sell, I dunno, landscaping services, it would help to target homeowners and gardeners, yes? And in your area, right? You might get John from Cincinnatti but unless you’re in the Cincinnatti area, forget it. John may be wonderful, but his following you is of little help to you. Social Media Today’s suggestion is to go after directories like We Follow. Agreed — and possibly also go after local groups of people. As in, put your change twitter handle on your business cards. You’re mainly going to be handing those to local folk, so there’s a match there.
There are some terminologies that are commonly used on Twitter but which some people, especially new tweeters, are not quite familiar with. Understanding these terminologies (vocabulary) will make tweeting a more pleasant experience; and they are very easy to learn.
Learn to use each social networking website’s special functions any time you’re starting your marketing campaign there. A good example is clicking on a tweet’s postage time, which thus isolates that tweet into people permalink. If you try this, you’ll be able to set up links to specific posts of yours without having to link to your full profile.
And one more important thing. I’ve respected your privacy. I’ve not shared your personal data or where you buy your underwear. I trust you will do change twitter handle the same.
Say you are trying to establish yourself online in the women’s health and beauty niche. You have a new Twitter account and you’ve followed a few leaders in that niche, and have a few followers in return. Get an account on Tweepi. You can buy a paid account, but I do this on the free account and it works fine.
Finally, a contest is one of the most explosive ways of how to get more followers on Twitter. Make the prize something coveted which relates to your niche. If you’re in the tech niche, give away the latest gadgetry from Apple. Heck, even if you’re not in the tech niche you can make that the prize because people love those kinds of popular gadgets. You can also use a contest to cover all of your bases and leverage other areas like increasing your amount of Facebook “Likes”.
